Navigating Holiday Celebrations While Keeping Facilities Functional and Employees Content

Hey there! 👋

You'd be such an amazing human if you:

Many hats and 24/7 availability are not new to Facility Managers. But what about festive holidays, which a majority of your staff would love to celebrate?

How do you, as an FM, ensure that your two important Ps (People and Place) are both functional?

I've been there, done that. I've celebrated festivals while at work due to emergencies, and I've been on call the majority of the time.

I've witnessed situations where people were reluctant to work because they wanted to celebrate, as well as leading a mobile maintenance team as a business model for a quick cash injection.

Without further ado, let's dive into the strategies that ensure everyone has joyous celebrations:

  1. Prioritize corrective maintenance or breakdown maintenance over major maintenance during festive holidays.

  2. Maintain a minimum staff required for the operation of the facilities. These staff members should be compensated either through overtime pay or bonuses, in addition to their salary.

  3. Have an emergency team on standby in case a major breakdown occurs.

  4. Ensure all corrective maintenance is completed before the festive season to prevent major emergencies.

  5. Prepare in advance and try to complete all pending work before the festive season begins.

  6. Avoid taking on new one-time projects during the festive season. People are likely to perform best when they are happy, and everyone deserves to have time apart from work. It's in everyone's best interest to have work-free time during the festive season.

Keep these tips in your back pocket, and enjoy the festive season without worries. After all, life's too short to spend it tangled up just in work, right?

That's it for today, folks! 👋
