Maintaining the Maintainers
A guide to building your star team
The core of your facilities management lies in your technical staff – individuals with versatile skills that are as rare as they are precious.
When hiring a technician, attitude is just as significant as skills. A technician who approaches their work with an eagerness to learn and grow surpasses a highly skilled yet arrogant counterpart.
Upon hiring of a technician, the initial priority is training through hands-on project experience.

For the first three months, the newly hired technician is paired with an experienced senior on each of your sites, exposing them to a diverse range of machinery, equipment, and assets.
These three months are pivotal, revealing the technician's true capabilities. During this period, they acquire new skills and work on different projects and machinery in diverse conditions, resulting in the development of a well-rounded technician.
Effective facility management hinges on the skills of your technical team. A small team of well-rounded technicians can proficiently oversee an entire facility with minimal external support.
This approach has enabled me to transform a cleaner into a technician, a mason into a plumber, and many others.
A key recommendation is to avoid assigning them to critical sites or those without essential equipment.
Instead, provide them with guidance from experienced technicians, continuous oversight, and frequent training.
This approach fosters their personal growth, improving their overall financial well-being, often resulting in job satisfaction and long-term retention.

Valuable Tips for Nurturing Your Maintenance Team:
Compensate them for their extra hours with overtime pay.
Offer wholesome meal choices and occasional treats, such as the start of new projects, milestone achievements, or significant festivals and occasions. This strengthens the team bond.
Prioritize their health by providing routine medical checkups at regular intervals.
Assess their performance frequently and allocate responsibilities and incentives based on their achievements.
Address their concerns and grievances promptly.
Maintaining a team isn't a straightforward task, but with patience, time, and a well-structured system, you can cultivate an all-star team that will be a formidable force to reckon with.
"A successful team isn't maintained; it's nurtured, one member at a time."
